I used to have one that was seven or eight years old, then I got a kitten who sat on it and chewed it daily until it went bald. It couldn't handle 15 pounds of love.

I realized they grow better the more you ignore them, from pic one to pic two. The only survivor. The others were killed by my meticulous care.

I finally get to see what it looks like grown up, it always dies on me.
I have a small pot of this.
I used to grow a pencil cactus, it got huge, probably 1.5 meters tall.
Repropagated after it got woody, growing very well.
The bottom stems of mine withered after 2-3 years, so I pruned it all and propagated 3 new pots.
Where is its base? Do you bottom water it?
This thing grows way too easily. I had two pots grow this big, had to throw them out to dry up because they wouldn't fit in the house.
