I have a few small terracotta pots that dry quickly near a bright window. For compact succulents, do you prefer a gritty mix with very little organic matter, or do you keep some regular potting soil in the blend so the roots do not dry out too fast?

For a windowsill planter, I prefer drainage first and then adjust the saucer. A decorative pot without a hole can work as a cachepot, but I would keep the plant in a removable nursery liner.
