I have a few gritty soil mixes that spill from larger drainage holes after watering. Do you use mesh or a small stone over the hole, or does that slow drainage too much for succulents?

I would use a shallow pot if the roots are compact, but I would still leave enough room for a gritty mix around the root ball. A deep pot can stay damp below even when the top looks dry.
