I am arranging a mixed succulent bowl and do not want the leaves to press together. Is a small visible gap better for airflow, or can the plants sit close if the bowl drains quickly and the mix stays gritty?

I would leave a visible finger-width gap between rosettes at planting time. The bowl will look slightly open at first, but the leaves have room to expand and air can move between crowns after watering.
